Each workshop, consisting of 45 minutes with an industry expert, will explore a topic of interest. Be prepared to be creative! Prototyping, collaboration, and hands-on exercises highly encouraged. Our industry experts have worked professionally in the video game industry and are available this day only to answer questions and give personalized advice.

1:00pm – 2:00pm  Interactive Storytelling Workshop
Sande Chen is a Writer/Game Designer whose experience spans 10 years of Game industry. Her credits include 1999 Independent Games Festival winner Terminus and the 2007 PC RPG of the Year, The Witcher, for which she was nominated for a Writers Guild Award in Videogame Writing. In 2006, she was profiled as one of the game industry’s top 100 most influential women. She has spoken about games at conferences around the globe, including the Game Developers Conference, SXSW, and LOGIN. She also has a Grammy nomination. She can be found on Twitter @sandechen 

2:00pm – 3:00pm Game Editors: How They Work and Choosing the Right One for Your Game
Erin Margolis is the CEO of Game Dev House, an organization that pairs video game industry professionals with students who want to learn professional game development with industry-level tools and practices. She was one of the first female students to attend The Guildhall at Southern Methodist University, and has worked in the video game industry for several years, in AAA development and with indie studios, as well as with iD Tech Camps at Harvard and Princeton. 

3:00pm – 4:00pm Intro to Level Design
Jess Haskins  is a freelance game designer and writer based in Brooklyn. Although her particular interests are in narrative design, worldbuilding, and interactive storytelling, she’s worked on everything from level design to community management, and once spent two intense weeks becoming an expert at computer Solitaire. Her credits include Creavures, a puzzle platformer for PC and iOS, and Guns of Icarus Online, an award-winning multiplayer online airship combat game on Steam. Jess holds an MFA in Design and Technology with a game design focus from Parsons the New School of Design, where she co-founded and served as president of the New School Game Club. She is currently the organizer for NYC Indie Games, a networking group for local Unity and indie developers. “The Hero Trap”
Nikita Mikros is a veteran of the NY indie game scene and a two time IGF finalist and Indecade awardee. He is the founder and creative director of SMASHWORX and Tiny Mantis Entertainment, two independent game studios. At SMASHWORX, Mr. Mikros designs and works on original titles including “Propaganda Lander” and his current project “The Hero Trap”. At Tiny Mantis, Mr. Mikros has worked on many games for clients including Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, LEGO, Bloomberg Tradebook and others. In addition Mr. Mikros has collaborated on four games with Joshua DeBonis, the most recent being Killer Queen Arcade which won the Developer’s Choice Award at Indiecade 2013.

Video Game Music
Neil is a recent graduate of Luther College, where he was the recipient of a Luther College Collaborative Research Grant for the summer of 2012, with which he studied film music. Neil has written for and conducted the Luther Philharmonia numerous times, and has written for a wide range of other ensembles. These include a piece for the Luther College Trumpet Choir, and a piece for the student-lead Luther choir Jubilus. He has done a growing number of short film scores as well, including the Live Source Collective’s film adaptation of “Bohemian Lights”, directed by Tyler Mercer.

Washington DC-based Mobile Gaming Startup
Jack Liu is the Creative Director for Digital Possum Games, an independent studio based in Washington DC that makes fun and positive mobile games. He grew up playing video games which led him to major in computer science. After trying lots of things, he found making video games was both his passion and work fulfillment. His favorite games are the Street Fighter franchise, Plants vs Zombies, and Bastion. He can be found on Twitter @jackzliu.

Venue Information  There is no food or drink onsite, but there are many places in walking distance to get coffee, beverages, snacks, and lunch.  Feel free to bring your own and come and go as you please through out the day.
